MULTIPLE GESTATION- 2 or more fetuses are present in the uterus
TYPES:
Dizygotic- occurs 2 separate ovum is fertilized resulting a twins that do not the same genetic make- up
Monozygotic- occurs when one ovum is fertilized but divides early in gestation and 2 embryos develop resulting an identical twins
CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS:
- large uterus for gestational age
- identified at ultrasound
- two distinct and separate fetal heart after 20 weeks gestation
- separate fetal parts is identified during third trimester
